The people are mainly of African descent, while the other portion of the population is of British, Portuguese, Lebanese and Syrian origin.
Education
Education is made compulsory for children between the ages of five and sixteen. The majority of the schools are funded and provided for by the government, with some assistance from religious groups. There are a total of 72 primary and secondary schools. In 1972 the training colleges were merged to form the Antigua State College.
